A senior official of the Ministry of Youth and Sports was detained during an operation by the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and the Anti-Corruption Commission. The official was arrested with a bribe of 31,700 EUR. The banknotes were pre-marked. The official asked for the money in order to help one of the sports federations get funding for European championships, it was reported.

In 2024, Bulgaria will host the European Weightlifting Championships. The prosecutor's office did not give a clear answer as to whether this was the sport in question.
