The Interior Ministry has purchased 1,300 spike strips for stopping motor vehicles on the road, to be sent to all regional directorates and the Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior.

The spike strips are 6 metres long, and each has 165 spikes which puncture the tires of a passing vehicle which gradually deflate, instead of blowing out or being cut up, the Interior Ministry explains. The devices are designed in such a way as to be safe to use and to be used effectively to stop vehicles only when absolutely necessary. The decision was made because of the more and more frequent serious incidents involving car chases between police and migrant traffickers.
