The dismantled bronze figures from the Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia will be transported on December 23 to the storage site, the regional administration announced. In parallel, the development of a technical specification for the planned restoration begins.

In an open letter to the Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, the Prime Minister and interim chief prosecutor, intellectuals insist that the institutions "take decisive action in defense of the constitutional order". They are disturbed by the debates on the dismantling of the Monument to the Soviet Army. The signatories are worried that there is a "campaign to rehabilitate the criminal communist regime".

According to them, the protection of "propaganda monuments erected in praise of the totalitarian communist regime" violates an article of the Criminal Code, which since the year 2,000 has criminalized the communist regime. It is also stated that the campaign to protect communist symbols is "part of the hybrid war" against Bulgaria and aims to move the country away from the EU and NATO.
