Bulgaria to refrain from new genomic techniques due to the public opinion

"New genomic techniques in agriculture are not GMOs. The topic was brought up by people who don't understand this. We will abstain until the Bulgarian society is informed," Minister of Agriculture Kiril Vatev has told bTV. Despite his personal support for the innovation, he voted with "abstain" at the last meeting of agriculture ministers in Brussels.

The minister refuted the claim that Bulgaria's voice in the council was decisive. "We abstained, but our weight is 1.53%. Germany also abstained. Now the result is 57% in favor, while it should be 62%," he said, pointing out that even if the use of genomic techniques was allowed, the bans on the import of GMO products would not be lifted.
