A Belize-flagged, UK-registered and Lebanese-operated cargo ship sailing from the United Arab Emirates to the Bulgarian port of Varna was attacked on Sunday in the Bab al Mandab Strait, between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, Reuters reported, citing British maritime security company Ambrey.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced that it had received a report of an incident 35 nautical miles south of the Yemeni port of Al Mukha, and that an explosion in close proximity to a vessel had resulted in damage. According to the information, the crew aboard the ship were safe. Early on Monday UKMTO reported that according to military authorities, the crew had abandoned the vessel which was at anchor.

Yemen's Houthi group has launched repeated drone and missile attacks against international commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait since mid-November, saying it is acting in solidarity with Palestinians as Israel wages war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported.
