Caretaker Minister of Interior Kalin Stoyanov and German Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser visited the "Kapitan Andreevo" border checkpoint and the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. The two discussed Bulgaria's accession to Schengen.
"For the federal government, it was crucial that Bulgaria meets the criteria for entry into the Schengen area. For us, the criteria have been fully met since last year. That is why we unanimously support this membership," Faeser said.
"We discussed the excellent bilateral cooperation, as well as the border management and migration," Kalin Stoyanov said. He added that migrant pressure at the Turkish border continues to decrease. Since the beginning of 2024, just over 7,000 people from third countries have tried to cross illegally, compared to 27,000 for the same period of 2023.
