A new private children's hospital would exacerbate the problem of understaffing, says lawyer

The Cabinet's decision to establish a private children's hospital, which was cancelled last night, was taken under conditions of an information blackout, lawyer Mariya Sharkova, a member of the Public Council for the Construction of a National Children's Hospital, told BNR. She added that the council would demand that the documents relating to the decision be made public.
Mariya Sharkova said that Sofia had a surplus of hospital beds, except for paediatric and long-term care beds.

"The opening of a private hospital with paediatric facilities would aggravate the staffing problem in the capital. Moreover, it will not be in the public interest - to improve children's healthcare - but in the private interest, because financially viable clinical pathways will be chosen and serious cases will not be admitted if the hospital loses financial resources," she pointed out.

Barring any force majeure, we should have a National Children's Hospital in 3-4 years, the lawyer added.
