Four Bulgarians, accused of one of the biggest frauds with social benefits in the UK, were sentenced to periods of 3 to 8 years in prison by the court in London's "Wood Green" district, BNR correspondent Veselin Paunov has reported. The fifth member of the gang, Tsvetka Todorova, got a three-year sentence, but since she spent more than 18 months in custody, she was released today.

According to the court, the Bulgarians stole £53.9m through a sophisticated combination of legitimate identity documents and false documentation to make it look like people were entitled to benefits.

Gyunesh Ali, Galina Nikolova, Stoyan Stoyanov and Patritsia Paneva have 28 days to appeal the sentence.
