Cases of driving after alcohol or drugs are on the rise in Bulgaria

Every third crime in Bulgaria is a traffic crime. This is one of the findings of the study "Trends and Prevention of Road Transport Crime", which was presented to the Criminology Research Council of the Ministry of Justice. It shows that the incidence of drink and drug driving is on the rise, and that increasing criminal repression is not solving the problems of road crime.

Last year, one third of the cases heard by the Supreme Court of Cassation were related to criminal offences on the road, Judge Krasimir Shekherdjiev said. The main penalties are imprisonment - most of them suspended.

The study highlights the existence of serious difficulties related to basic forensic examinations such as car technical and toxicological examinations. While in the case of the former the problem is the small number of experts, in the case of the latter - the long time for examination of samples.

Attention is also drawn to the unavailability of traffic police teams in Sofia dealing with car accidents.
