Atanas Zafirov has been elected interim chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party to replace the resigned leader Kornelia Ninova after the poor performance of the leftist party in the elections.

The direct election of a permanent leader of the socialists should be carried out by November 10, it was decided at a meeting of the BSP National Council.

A few days ago Zafirov told BNT that the BSP would support an expert cabinet with the mandate of the first political force.

Zafirov has three master's degrees - "National Security", "Finance" and "Bulgarian Language and History", BTA reported. He was a deputy in the 42nd, 43rd, 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th and 49th National Assemblies. He is a delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

He is also the President of the Bulgarian Rugby Federation.
