Bulgarian MEP Tsvetelina Penkova of the Bulgarian Socialist Party has been unanimously elected as President of the European Energy Forum - the largest organisation in the energy sector in Brussels.

Ms Penkova will be the first woman to be president of the organisation. For the first time in the 20-year history of the European Energy Forum, a Socialist will lead the organisation. Penkova succeeds former Polish Prime Minister and President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek, who has led the Forum for the past 10 years.

Speaking about her priorities in the post following her election, Penkova said: "The election campaign gave us the opportunity to hear the voice of European citizens directly. They do not want to hear more declarations about saving the climate, they want a quick and effective reduction of energy bills. This can only be achieved through more investment in baseload sources, such as nuclear power, and better connections between all EU countries".
