According to Vladimir Malinov, suitable geological conditions are found in Northern Bulgaria- in the marl deposits of the Moesian Plate. "So far, no field studies have been carried out at specific sites on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria", Vladimir Malinov stressed. He clarified that according to the adopted strategy, the country must build a repository by 2050. If it fails to do so, Bulgaria will be unable to develop its own nuclear capacity.
Due to the changed geopolitical environment, Bulgaria can no longer rely on the agreement with the Russian Federation for the storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.
