The European Prosecutor's Office in Sofia has seized property as part of an investigation into a project worth 2.6 million euros (5.2 million leva), involving activities on the water supply network of a municipality in Bulgaria, financed by the EU.

Employees of the Agriculture Fund and the mayor, suspected of fraud that damaged the EU budget, are being investigated, the prosecutor's office reports.

The aim of the project was the reconstruction of the water supply network and the water reservoir of a municipality in Bulgaria, financed by the Bulgarian State Fund "Agriculture" under the Program for the Development of Rural Areas of the EU.

State officials from the fund are suspected of having entered into false agreements with the mayor and private companies in order to increase the price of construction activities and overcharge the paying agency, BTA reported.
