Colourful kites will fly up into the sky over Shabla on the last weekend of August, a reminder that summer is still here.

The 13th edition of the Kite Festival will take place in a locality called Malkoto More (Little Sea) near Bulgaria’s Northernmost seaside resort. The organizers promise wonderful sights starting at 10 AM until nightfall with professionally piloted kites shaped like birds, favourite characters and animals, everyday objects and fantastic creatures. The motto of this year’s event, taking place on 31 August and 1 September, is “The sparkles inside us are what matter”.

On Friday, hours before the mayor of Shabla municipality Marian Zhechev officially opens the festival, there will be a kite workshop at the “Green educational centre” where visitors will be able to make a kite of their own following their own imagination. Lilia Tomerova will present a photo exhibition “Four seasons” presenting the beauty of Shabla in all seasons.

Children from the clubs in Balchik, Dobrich, Kavarna and Varna, as well as children from Poland, will take to the stage on Saturday. The programme also includes a hike to Tyulenovo rocks, and a concert by the rock band Wickeda.

People from Bulgaria, Turkey, Estonia and the UK are going to fly their kites at Shabla. Martin Karnolsky will create a veritable kite music and dance extravaganza, together with his daughter Raya.

“Kites are a symbol of the eternal human endeavour to soar up into the air like a bird, to fly up in the sky, to make dreams come true,” say the people who will make sure children and adults will enjoy the pastime they love. So, heed their call and go and enjoy flying a kite over the beach at Shabla.

The Kite Festival is taking place under the project “Shabla and birds”, with the financial support of the Culture National Fund. It is organized by the Municipal Foundation Caron Limen and Shabla municipality.
