The celebration of the 139th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia ended with a fireworks ceremony in Plovdiv.

"Today, we pay tribute to a remarkable generation of enlightening historical figures, who without considering the interests of the Great Powers, by the force of their ideal, swept away the boundaries of a huge historical injustice", President Rumen Radev said in his speech.

The head of state emphasized that nihilism is not a solution, and we must seek the way out by rediscovering the old lesson of 1885: "The solution lies in the civic reassessment and personal responsibility of each one of us., in our ability as a society to abandon lawlessness and arrogance, fear and apathy, and everything that hinders the nation's progress, so that we can fulfil the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to this sacred cause – the Unification".

National Assembly Speaker Raya Nazaryan, caretaker Premier Dimitar Glavchev, Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, Interior Minister Atanas Ilkov, Plovdiv Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov, Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv, politicians and citizens attended the ceremony in Unification" Square.
