''Ursula von der Leyen is expected to choose a woman as a candidate from Bulgaria for European Commissioner, primarily due to the severely disrupted gender balance in the European Commission.” This prediction was made by MEP Radan Kanev from the Group of the European People's Party in an interview with bTV.

The Council of Ministers has proposed Ekaterina Zaharieva (GERB-SDS) and Julian Popov (PP-DB) as Bulgaria’s candidates for European Commissioner.

Radan Kanev expressed concern that a formal quota criterion might outweigh the professional biographies of the candidates.

MEP Kanev also commented on the situation in Bulgaria, stating that no solution to the political crisis is in sight.

According to Radan Kanev, there is a deep institutional conflict and a decay in Bulgarian politics due to the long years in which shadow dependencies have prevailed over public political responsibility.
