Corruption allegations cast shadow over Ekaterina Zaharieva's candidacy for European Commissioner

The scandal with issuing Bulgarian passports for money six years ago may put into question the candidacy of Ekaterina Zaharieva for European Commissioner, the BNR correspondent in Brussels reported, quoting "Politico".

The article quotes the speech of Bulgarian MEP Nikola Minchev from PP-DB and the liberal group "Renew Europe", whose candidate Yulian Popov was rejected. Minchev said that "the accusations cast a shadow over Zaharieva's candidacy", given the fact that the rule of law is among Ursula von der Leyen's priorities.

"Politico" also quotes "Euractiv", according to which a former employee of the migration department accused Zaharieva that while she was minister of justice in the period 2015-2017, she participated in a scheme for granting citizenship for money. Back then Zaharieva denied the accusations and there were no consequences for her.
