Over 1/3 of the cases of African swine fever among wild boars in Europe have been registered in Bulgaria, the Association of Pig Breeders reports. In the last week of October, 201 cases of the disease among wild boars were detected on the territory of the EU, as 80 of them were in Bulgaria.
The wild boar is the major reservoir and source of swine fever in the environment, therefore the migration of these animals plays an important role in the spread of the virus, the Association of Pig Breeders recalls. They also recall that limiting the population of wild boars is one of the effective ways to limit the spreading of the disease.
In October, two cases of African swine fever were registered in large livestock farms in neighboring Romania. More than 22,000 animals were killed in the two farms, BTA reports.
