Orthodox Christians celebrate the Conception of Theotokos by St. Anne

On December 9 the Orthodox Church celebrates the Conception of the Most Holly Theotokos by Saint Anne.

Joachim and Anne were childless for a long time despite their righteous life. In addition to their personal grief, they also endured public reproach, as childlessness was considered a divine punishment.

The couple constantly prayed to God for a child. Ane day the Angel appeared to Anna and told her that she would give birth to Mary for the salvation of the world. The future mother made a promise to dedicate her little girl to God. Thus, three-year-old Mary was brought to the temple and presented to God.

Saint Anne is regarded as patron saint of marriage, family, young girls, widows and motherhood.
