Bulgarians' assessments of the past year in personal terms differ sharply from their views on the situation in the country and the world, according to a nationally representative survey conducted by polling agency Alpha Research between December 1 and 10, 2024. 22% of respondents said that 2024 was better for them and their families, 24% thought it was worse, and 54% saw no change.

As for the situation in Bulgaria, only 7% think it has improved, while 58.5% are disappointed. Globally, amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the Middle East and new political realities in key countries, only 4.8% think 2024 is better than the previous year, while 74% believe the global situation is becoming increasingly uncertain and unstable.

Looking ahead to 2025, 45% of respondents believe that problems in various parts of the world will worsen, while only 26% hope the negative trend will reverse. Against this backdrop, as with estimates for the past year, personal expectations for the coming year are in sharp contrast. Only 16% of Bulgarians are pessimistic, while a full 43% are optimistic.
