The three draft amendments to the Law on Religious Denominations received a large majority in the first reading in the National Assembly. The new texts were prompted by a decision by the Supreme Court of Cassation to register a religious organisation called the Old Calendar Orthodox Church of Bulgaria in the court's public register.
The proposal by the Vazrazhdane party aims to prevent the possibility of more than one Orthodox church calling itself "Orthodox" being registered.

GERB-SDS describes the Bulgarian Orthodox Church - Bulgarian Patriarchate as the sole representative of the country's traditional faith - Eastern Orthodoxy.

BSP-United Left points out that according to the Constitution, the provisions of the 2002 Confessions Act and Canon Law, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is part of the universal Church and its rules of unity are recognised.
