Last year, Tentoglou won an Olympic title and gold medals from the World Indoor Championships and the European Outdoor Championships in the long jump.

The top three positions are completed by swimmer David Popovici (Romania) and basketball player Nikola Jokic (Serbia). Bulgarian weightlifter Karlos Nassar and the winner of 24 Grand Slam titles Novak Djokovic (Serbia) shared fourth place.

The national news agencies of the countries in the region participated in the poll for "Athlete of the Balkans" - ANA-MPA (Greece), AGERPRESS (Romania), Anadolu Agency (Turkey), TANYUG (Serbia), MINA (Montenegro), MIA (Republic of North Macedonia), HINA (Croatia), FENA (Bosnia and Herzegovina), KNA (Cyprus), ATA (Albania) and KosovaPress (Kosovo).
