Sea vacation in Pomorie

Pomorie is one of the most ancient towns in Bulgaria. Historical records read that the town existed in the 5th century BC under the name of Anhialo. Today, Pomorie is of the most popular Bulgarian Black Sea resorts, welcoming thousands of tourists every summer. The town of Pomorie is famous not only for the beach and sun but also for the mud of the nearby lake, which has been known for its therapeutic qualities since the time of the ancient Thracians and Romans, and used for treatment. In 2007 the resort was named Bulgarian capital of spa tourism, under the initiative of several tourist organisations. According to Dragomir Naidenov of the Pomorie municipality, responsible for the tourism sphere, the resorts in the municipality were visited by 60,000 tourists during the past season. Hotel owners expect 10% increase of the number of tourists this year.

“A rehabilitation center and 4 hotels offer spa services to our guests. There is also a 5-star hotel in Pomorie, which has received the award for best hotel in the whole of Eastern Europe. The resort of Pomorie has been known around the world for quite some time. Tourists enjoy their time here, no matter if they look for quiet and relaxing atmosphere or fun adventures at the beach. Everyday a ship takes tourists at a sea trip in the Bay of Burgas and a number of other attractions exist.”

Those who want to learn something new during their vacation can get acquainted with sea salt production in Pomorie. The only Museum of the Salt in Eastern Europe and Bulgaria is situated in the town. It was founded in 2002. Tourists can see the modern ways of production of the renowned Pomorie salt and also the ancient methods used by the Thracians.

Bird lovers also enjoy Pomorie, as more than 200 types of bird species can be seen here, many of them protected by law. A number of tourists also prefer Pomorie due to its ancient history.

“We have unique historical monuments in Pomorie,” Dragomir Naidenov says. “Tourists can sea an ancient Thracian tombs from the times of Anhialo. The monastery of St, George is also an attractive place for tourists, who come to our town. The old houses of Pomorie with their unique architecture are also very interesting. The cultural events in Pomorie are attractive for tourists, too” Mr. Naidenov adds.

Pomorie enjoys a festive atmosphere throughout the whole summer. July and August, however, are the busiest months of the year. Many of the tourists who visit Pomorie return again to the ancient town. Some prefer to stay at one and the same place while others visit the nearby villages, where they can try the local cuisine. Pomorie always warmly welcomes its guests.
