“This is an opportunity for children to listen to different kinds of music,” says Svetlina Terzieva, one of the event’s organizers. “It is a way to nurture their self-esteem, self-confidence and curiosity and this boosts their creative spirit. One of the basic ideas is to help parents and children acquire a taste for and an interest in classical musical instruments and music, together.”

On 1 November, National Enlighteners’ Day the National Opera and Ballet stages Borislav - an opera by Maestro Georgi Atanassov. One of the first composers of the Bulgarian school of composition, Georgi Atanassov was given his first music lessons here, in Bulgaria. At the age of 15 he was admitted to the Bucharest music school but had to leave for financial reasons. From 1899 until 1902 he studied at the Rossini Conservatoire in Italy with Pietro Mascagni, author of Cavalleria Rusticana, which he graduated with honours and was bestowed the title Maestro di musica. He then returned to Bulgaria to become army bandmaster and conductor of the Sofia opera house, a post he occupied until the end of his life. His music is emotional and imbued with the traits of the Bulgarian national tradition. Georgi Atanassov bases his operas and operettas on stories from the history of the Bulgarian nation, from rural life, from tales and legends. Borislav is his first opera, composed in 1911 and based on the drama by Ivan Vazov, also called Borislav. This is also the first Bulgarian historical opera, telling the story of the captive Byzantine king Theodor and his court intrigues, and the help he got from the Bulgarian boyars against Tsar Assen. 104 years after the opera was written, it was performed as part of the Stage of the Ages summer festival held on Tsarevets hill in Veliko Turnovo. On 1 November the National Opera is unveiling its new concert season. The opera Borislav is directed by Academician Plamen Kartalov, conductor – Georges Dimitrov, the scenography is by Boryan Belchev and Plamen Kartalov.
