Photo: picture library

On 29 June the Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates Chief Apostles Peter and Paul, zealous propagators of Christianity who underwent much suffering and persecution. In popular Christianity in Bulgaria the feast is called Petrovden. Petrovden is preceded by Peter’s Lent that begins on the first week after Pentecost. On this day the Lent wraps up and a young Peter’s chicken is served for dinner. Name days are celebrated by anybody with the names Peter (meaning stone in Greek), Pavel (Paul), Petrana, Polina, Pavlina, Petya and Kamen.
