Parliament votes to pay Russia for Belene NPP equipment

Bulgarian parliament adopted a bill at first reading, authorizing the government to loan the National Electric Company the money for paying the Russian Atomstroyexport company for the equipment it has manufactured for the aborted Belene NPP.
The money will be granted after the European Commission gives the go-ahead. Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova stated that the definitive endorsement of the bill will pave the way towards solving one of Bulgaria’s biggest problems in the energy sector and that if the reactors are not paid for, the country’s energy sector will be put to extremely high risk.
