Today the town of Pliska, Northeastern Bulgaria, is hosting celebrations to mark 1335 years since the creation of the Bulgarian state in the Balkans. Pliska was the first capital of Bulgaria in this part of Europe. Celebrations peak today at 6 pm with laying wreaths at two emblematic monuments in Pliska’s center: of Tsar Boris I who Christianized Bulgaria, and of archeologists Karel Skorpil and Fyodor Uspenski who began the first archeological excavations in the ancient city.
