Greek farmers attempt to block two borders

Photo: BGNES

Protesting Greek farmers continue their attempts to block the borders with Bulgaria and with the Republic of Macedonia thus hampering travelers entering Greece, BGNES reports. Tensions remain on the Greek-Bulgarian border though it has not been blocked by the tractors yet. Farmers are currently in the area of Serres and the police keep them away from the Bulgarian border. Nevertheless, they have caused difficulties for traffic to Thessaloniki. The Greek farmers have this time extended the scope of their protests. The Interior Ministry of the Republic of Macedonia has said that today they are expected to block the Evzoni checkpoint on the Greece-Macedonia border. Every winter in the past ten years Greek farmers who have no work to do during the season, block the border with Bulgaria causing huge damage to Bulgarian businesses. Last year alone losses exceeded 10 million euro. It is still a mystery, comments BGNES, why the Greek farmers protesting against their government, arrive driving their tractors to the border with Bulgaria, instead of traveling to the center of Athens where their chances of being heard by PM Alexis Tsipras are much stronger.
