On April 3 (or March 22 by the old calendar) in 1879 the Constitutional Assembly in the Old capital Veliko Tarnovo chose to make Sofia the new capital city of the Principality of Bulgaria. At that time Sofia had 11 694 citizens, two schools, seven churches, 10 inns, 120 shops, 62 pubs, 19 bakeries and 3306 houses. The overall area of the “city” was 2.84 square kilometres.
