20 economic centres provide almost 90 percent of production in Bulgaria

An economic megapolis is taking shape in Southern Bulgaria, along the Sofia-Pazardjik-Plovdiv-Stara Zagora-Bourgas axis, while individual islands of economic activity are developing in the north, indicates a survey by the Institute for Market Economics covering the past five years.

20 major economic hubs turn out 86 percent of all production in Bulgaria, with Sofia accounting for 40 percent of this figure. They also account for 60 percent of the country’s population. To bridge the gap among the regions, economists are suggesting the creation of tax-free zones in northwestern Bulgaria.
