According to a Eurostat analysis on the share of environmental taxes in total government revenues from taxes and social contributions for 2016, Bulgaria is among the five EU countries which pay the highest environmental taxes.
In Bulgaria, environmental taxes account for 9.6 percent of the total government revenues from taxes and social contributions, the average for the EU being 6.3 percent. Energy taxes (including transport fuels) account for the highest share of the environmental taxes collected – around 75 percent.
