Bulgarian archaeologists unearth unique find in fortress of Lyutitsa

Photo: BGNES

A lead seal of a type not previously discovered in Bulgaria has been discovered by archaeologists working at the medieval fortress of Lyutitsa near Ivaylovgrad.

The image of Byzantine Empress Irene is on one side of the seal, while the other shows - the Virgin Mary and Jesus. So far only two other similar seals have been known and they are stored in the British Museum. The find shows that Lyutitsa was an important Bulgarian settlement whose governors maintained contacts with rulers of the largest medieval states.
