A Eurostat analysis of the financial characteristics of consumption of households in the EU indicates that what Bulgarians spent most on, in their consumer basket in 2017, was food.
Food accounts for almost one third of Bulgarians’ total expenses, and with regard to this indicator, the country falls into the same group as Romania, Latvia and Estonia. The second biggest expenditure item are home maintenance costs: water, electricity, gas and central heating or solid fuel bills – around 15 percent. Transport and social security contributions account for around 7 percent of the incomes of Bulgarians, clothes and shoes – 4.2 percent, healthcare – 5.4 percent, communications – 4.4 percent.
