Union of Democratic Forces marks 29th anniversary

 The Union of Democratic Forces (SDS), which is the first democratic political formation after the fall of the communist regime in Bulgaria, marks its 29th anniversary today. The Union of Democratic Forces was established on December 7, 1989 by 10 political parties and organizations. The first Chairman of the party was Zhelyu Zhelev who later became the first democratic President of Bulgaria. Later, Petar Stoyanov became the second Bulgarian President nominated by the Union of Democratic Forces. SDS also nominated three Premiers- Philip Dimitrov, Stefan Sofiyanski and Ivan Kostov. During their government Bulgaria made important steps on its road to NATO and EU membership, the Currency Board was introduced and the Union of Democratic Forces became a political party. Currently, the Union of Democratic Forces is not represented at this country’s National Assembly, but the party has the ambition to become again a key factor on the Bulgarian political stage.
