Brussels criticizes lack of strict rules for granting Bulgarian citizenship in exchange of investments

The European Commission has presented a report on schemes for acquiring citizenship against investment in some EU Member States. Bulgaria is among those criticized over the lack of stringent requirements for granting citizenship to investors, the lack of a person's physical residence obligation, and the requirement for other real ties to the state. Candidates are interviewed but do not necessarily know Bulgarian language. Our country has also been criticized for not having a regulator for investments-for-citizenship scheme, as well as no comprehensive information about the identity of people who have received citizenship for investment.

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice has come up with proposals for amendments to the Bulgarian Citizenship Act. Currently, 20 EU Member States are implementing investments-for-citizenship schemes.
