Bulgarians are afraid to report corruption

People in Bulgaria point to political corruption, misuse of public funds and judicial corruption as the biggest public problems out of all forms of corruption.

71.2 percent of respondents say they want investigations to reach up to the highest political echelons, a Transparency International survey shows.

Yet a mere 24.5 percent say they are willing to report corruption to the media, only 1/5 are willing to approach the police and only 1/10 – the prosecutor’s office. The reason is that people are afraid of the consequences, as well as the perception that the officials are also corrupt.
