Representatives of the World Health Organization, UINICEF, patient and civic organizations signed in Sofia a memorandum against advertising and promotion of tobacco products and sponsorship by the tobacco industry. Bulgaria is part of the Convention on Tobacco Control, but it does not follow its rules, Dr. Mihail Okoliyski from the World Health Organization Country Office in Sofia said. According to a research of John Hopkins research university carried out in 2017, tobacco items are sold near 96% of the schools in Sofia and 25% of the sixteen-year-old Bulgarians smoke on a daily basis. Any form of tobacco item advertising which young people identify increases their chance to start smoking by 7%, the survey shows.
