For 10 years, the highway network in Bulgaria has almost doubled in size. The length of the motorways was 418 kilometers back in 2007 and in 2018 it was already 757 km. This has happened largely thanks to EU support, according to a report by the European Court of Auditors.

By 2013, the EU had co-financed 85% of the construction of 264 km. of the main European network in Bulgaria, including the highways from Sofia to Bourgas and to the border with Turkey. It was pointed out that with the completion of the Trakia highway, travel time from Sofia to the seaside has been reduced by 90 minutes and the average speed has increased from 68 to 105 km/h.
