After a long preparation, a 17-storey unfinished administrative building in Sofia dating to the Socialist era was demolished in a controlled explosion on Sunday morning.  Designed as a publishing and editorial complex in the shape of an open book, its construction started some 4 decades ago near one of the main thoroughfares of the capital but it was left unfinished due to lack of capital.

After the collapse of Socialism in 1989 and the start of the democratic changes in Bulgaria, the state-owned complex known as IPK Rodina changed ownership several times and the working newspaper printing workshop was demolished first.
The 6-hectare plot is currently owned by the largest group of private hospitals in the country, Bulpharma. The investment intentions for the vacated terrain are still unclear.
