Bulgaria will exist as long as the eternal flame burns in front of the Unknown Soldier! That is how Bulgarians explain the symbol of the monument in the centre of Sofia to their children and grandchildren.

A sarcophagus has been built next to the St. Sophia church with 15 casings containing earth from all parts of Bulgaria, and the mortal remains of unknown soldiers from different historic locations. That is where the eternal flame burns as a tribute to their memory. It is watched over by a lion which is an element of the Bulgarian coat of arms.

Find out more about the monument to the Unknown Soldier and how it has come to be a symbol of Bulgarian statehood here.
