The European Green Leaf Award 2021 has been awarded to the Bulgarian town of Gabrovo. The European Commission assessed the investments in energy efficiency and urban development, but also achievements in separate waste collection and campaigns among citizens, the local administration announced. "We are the only city in Central and Eastern Europe to have won the award in the contest’s five-year history," they said.
The Bulgarian city, known as the capital of humor and jokes, was applying for the third time in the environmental contest. This year Gabrovo reached the final in the company of 4 more towns - the Danish Elsinore, Nyborg and Rinkobing-Skjern and Finnish Lappeenranta. The award also includes a cash prize of 75 thousand euros.
