65% of foods sold in retail chains in Bulgaria are locally produced

Nearly two-thirds of the food products sold in major retail chains Bulgaria are of Bulgarian producers, the Association for Modern Trade reported.

The largest share of Bulgarian production of 73% is in bread and bakery products. In one of the chains they reach 100%.

70 percent of the meat and meat products sold in retail chains are Bulgarian. With milk and dairy products the percentage is 69.

The most serious problem is the supply of Bulgarian fruits and vegetables. They account for only 44% of all fruits and vegetables sold in supermarkets. However, a fact that should be taken into account is Bulgaria's geographical position due to which it can produce only a part of the fruits and vegetables that are in demand, the Association clarifies, as quoted by BTA.
