Bulgarian athletes stranded in Belmeken sports complex after heavy snow

The winter situation in some Bulgarian regions remains complicated after the heavy snowfall. Some villages are still without electricity and water.

Today, the snow on the road to the National Sports Complex Belmeken in Rila Mountain, where 180 athletes from Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary have been stranded since yesterday, is expected to be removed. Two meter tall snow drifts were formed after last night's snowstorm. All athletes are feeling well.

The Shipka Pass has been cleared, a representative of the regional office of the Road Infrastructure Agency told BNR. Some areas of the Balkan Mountain Range saw 80 centimeters of snow.

A partial state of emergency has been declared in the Municipality of Suvorovo, Varna District. The partial state of emergency remains in place in the villages of Bulair, Solnik and Bardarevo.
