Minister of Justice calls for resignation of Prosecutor General

The new caretaker Minister of Justice Ivan Demerdzhiev has called on Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev to resign. Otherwise, the minister would submit his reasons for a new request for ousting of the chief prosecutor, after the Constitutional Court ruled on the question of his predecessor Yanaki Stoilov whether the Minister of Justice has the right to request the removal of the Prosecutor General.

Minister Demerdzhiev expects the answer of the constitutional judges to be positive, as his reasons behind the request are related to some pre-trial proceedings, which led to verdicts for this country in the European Court of Human Rights. According to Ivan Demerdzhiev, “the whole society wants the Prosecutor General to work transparently, objectively, honestly, and to apply the law equally to all."

Therefore, according to him, the Prosecutor's Office needed a radical reform, part of which was related to the figure of the chief prosecutor himself.
