A former criminal police officer was shot dead in broad daylight in the Lozenets district of Sofia near a large shopping centre.

Unconfirmed sources say Lyubomir Ivanov, 49, was shot by a bicycle rider passing by.

The name of the murdered policeman first appeared in the criminal chronicles in 2008, when he was arrested for leaking classified information, but was later acquitted and reinstated in the Capital Directorate of Interior.

In 2018, he was issued an Interpol red notice for ties to people involved in illegal cigarette production and distribution.
