A procession is being organized today to the stone quarry near Lovech where Sunny Beach concentration camp once stood, as well as a memorial service to honour the memory of the victims of the communist terror.

The Sunny Beach death camp was created after the concentration camp at Belene was closed, and existed from 1959 to 1962. Dozens of opponents of the communist regime were massacred at the concentration camp near Lovech without trial or sentence, others died of the effects of hard labour, privation and torture.

“This is one of the most tragic pages in Bulgarian history and we must remember it, we must never forget it and draw our lessons from it. The victims must be remembered and honoured,” said the chairman of the Lovech organization of the Union of Democratic Forces Georgi Mitev whose party is organizing the event.
