Interior Minister: smugglers from all over Europe intercepted in Bulgaria

Photo: BGNES

People from all over Europe have been caught smuggling in Bulgaria. This was announced during Question Time by the Minister of the Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev.

Less than 5% of the indictees received effective sentences, he added. Most often the perpetrators were sentenced to probation and fines. So far, police have foiled more than 2,600 attempts to smuggle people across the Bulgarian border.

"Among them there are even citizens of Italy and Poland, which is surprising," Demerdzhiev stressed. The reason, he said, is the weak sanctions and the fact that not all acts are criminalised. Proposals for legislative changes in this direction have already been submitted.
