Rare phenomenon: albino roe deer photographed in the Rhodopes

A rare white roe deer was caught by photo traps in one of the hunting farms of the South Central State Enterprise-Smolyan in the Western Rhodopes. The animal has an apparent age of between 5 and 7 years. "This is a very rare phenomenon and is probably a consequence of inbreeding, which is why genetic changes in appearance have occurred," says the director of the enterprise, Eng. Zdravko Bakalov.

In the months with lots of snow, the roe deer can hide well from predators, but in the spring it can be seen from afar. It is probably the more secretive way of life of roe deer that allowed the albino to survive so long in the wild, experts say.
