The History Museum in Asenovgrad is marking the 940th anniversary of the founding of Bachkovo monastery with an exhibition “Miraculous icons and holy relics in the Balkans”.
Founded by Gregory Pakourianos, Bachkovo Monastery was part of Asenovgrad’s economic, cultural and spiritual life for centuries. With its rich historical, artistic and architectural heritage, in our day the monastery continues to attract thousands of visitors.
The exhibition features 24 display boards presenting churches and monasteries with miraculous icons and relics of saints, accompanied by the intriguing story of each of them, and of each of the icons. The exhibition is organized jointly with the Prof. Ivan Duychev Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, and there will be a bilingual catalogue of the icons.
