The parliamentary committee on legal affairs approved, at first reading, the amendments putting in place a mechanism for investigating the prosecutor general of Bulgaria. The bill was passed with 191 votes in favour, none against and 33 abstentions (all deputies from the "Vazrazhdane" party). The committee’s chair Stoyu Stoev stated that he would do his utmost so that the texts be discussed at today’s sitting of the National Assembly.

Under the amendments, a criminal judge from the Supreme Court of Cassation will be able to initiate a probe and launch an investigation against the prosecutor general or any of his deputies, when there is sufficient evidence a crime has been committed. In addition, the appointment and the dismissal of the prosecutor general will now need 13 votes, instead of the current 17 votes at the Supreme Judicial Council.

“If this law had been adopted in good time, we wouldn’t now be having the war we are seeing,” commented Justice Minister in the caretaker government Krum Zarkov.

Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev attended the sitting of the legal committee but kept his silence.
